Skull and butterfly wing on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A skull with a green and yellow tone forms the centre of the design, with a blue butterfly wing sweeping up and to the left and a red rose or flower at the lower left. The shading is smooth and realistic, with soft gradients on the bone and wing and sharp highlights on the wing edges. The palette is bold and saturated, and the design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind came over Gallows Col at dusk carrying the smell of wet rock and something sweeter, like crushed rosehips, and my brother Tomas swore it was the dead talking. I told him the dead had better manners than to rustle a man's pack, and kept walking with my head down against the grit.

We found the skull at the foot of the old cairn, half sunk in the snow. Its bone had gone the yellow-green of candle wax that has sat too long in a window, lichen blooming along the cheekbones like moss on a gatepost. Beside it lay a single wing, blue as the hour just after a storm, torn ragged at the edges. When the gusts came it lifted and settled, lifted and settled, as though something underneath still wanted to fly.

Tomas wanted it for his mother, who collected such things from the high meadows and pressed them between the pages of her hymn book. I told him no. My grandfather had kept a rule on these passes: take nothing that is still trying to leave. Tomas laughed and reached for it anyway, and the wing came away in his glove with a sound like a page turning. Then the sky above the col went dark red, and the loose snow began to stir around the skull in slow, deliberate rings.

We left the wing where it had been, wedged between two stones, and tied a length of red wool to the cairn so the next walkers would know. In the morning the wool was still there, but the wing was gone, and in its place lay a single rose, fresh and dew-heavy, its stem knotted through the thread.
