Watercolour triangle with galaxy splash on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A pointed triangle sits on the upper arm, outlined in thin black at its edges and filled with soft washes of pink, red, orange, yellow, purple and blue that bleed upward past the top of the shape. Speckles and small splashes of colour scatter around the wash, suggesting a galaxy or paint splatter effect. The skin is pale and the background is a dark sleeve and a blurred warm-toned interior, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The pigment man came up Coble Row the week the furnaces went cold, his tin box rattling with jars of powdered colour, and he would not sell a single one to Nell Garrow until she had shown him the sky she meant to paint.

She took him to the yard behind the glassworks, where a sheet of tin hung from a nail on the shed wall. It had been a harbour pennant once, cut into a point and painted to warn the boats off the Hoop Rocks, and the sea wind had worn it thin. Nell said the sky above the rocks at dusk was the colour of her father's furnace mouth just before it cooled, and she wanted that on the tin, pointing down at the water where the boats had been lost.
He sold her rose-petal pink, a yellow scraped from the ash her father swore was gold, and a blue so deep it looked wet. She worked them into the wash with a brush worn to a stub, and the colour refused to stay inside the lines. It crept past the top edge of the tin and climbed the shed boards like smoke from a stack. "Water always wants to go up when nobody is watching it," the pigment man said, packing his box.
Her father came out coughing, wiped his hands on his apron and looked at the colour climbing the wall for a long time. Then he lifted the pennant off its nail, turned it over, and hung it back the right way up, so the sea could see the sky on it. The pigment man left the jars with her and did not ask for payment.
