Watercolour splash tattoo on a shoulder
Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a large watercolour-style tattoo covering the shoulder and top of the upper arm, seen from behind. The design is made of loose, blurred washes of pink, red, green, yellow and blue, with a few dots and a small solid black heart. The ink looks soft and painterly with few hard outlines, and the colour spreads across the curve of the shoulder.

The rain came sideways off the canal the morning Ambrose Tull left his tins out on the step, and by the time I ran down with the broom the lids had gone and the colours were already sliding into the gutter. Rose madder, lemon, a green like wet ferns. I stood in my apron and watched Tanner Street turn into a palette.

Ambrose did not come out. He sat at the window with his tea going cold, hands folded, as if the weather were a customer who had not yet paid. When the afternoon cleared he came down in his carpet slippers and crouched by the kerb. He touched the pink with one finger, held it up to the light, then wiped it across the back of my hand. "Nobody mixes that," he said. "The rain does."
The wall of the chandler's opposite had taken the worst of it. Red ran down in long drips, blue pooled at the bottom, and the yellow had bloomed into a soft sun that no brush of his had ever managed. He would not let me scrub it. He fetched a tin of black ink from the back shelf, the one he used for lettering shop signs, and with a single stroke of the nib he set a small heart in the blue, where the wash had gathered thickest. "There," he said. "Now it's finished."
Weeks later the wall was still there, the colours fading at the edges as the weather took them. I walked past it every morning on my way to the shop. Some days the heart looked lonely in all that spill, and some days it seemed the only thing on the street that had been decided on purpose.
