Wavy swirl and vertical line on the nape
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of the back of a person's neck, with hair tied up and a white top with straps visible. The tattoo is a thin vertical line that drops from the hairline into an abstract, wavy form that curls into a shaded spiral at the bottom. The linework is fine and the spiral is filled with dense grey shading, set against a plain, softly lit background.

The tide was already turning when the rope came loose, and Old Tamsin said nothing about it, only tied a knot in her apron string the way she did when she meant to remember something. We had a dozen lines of smoke off the harbour wall by then, and the fog sat on the water like flour on a board. Her son Eli had gone out at slack water with the lantern and the good hook, and he was not back by the time the bread came out of the ovens at four.

She worked the dough without looking up. You knit a wave with your wrists, she told me, not your shoulders. The line of it runs straight down from the first pull, thin as a fishing gut, and then it breaks where the water breaks and goes round on itself, round and round until it finds the bottom and sits there. She had me draw one on the flour with my finger, a long stroke and then a curl, and I got it wrong three times before she laughed and let me keep going.
Eli came up the slipway at first light with the lantern out and the hook dragging behind him, empty but whole. Tamsin didn't run to him. She took the last loaf from the peel, turned it over, and tapped its base the way you tap a bell. Sound bread, she said, and went to put the kettle on, and that was all anyone ever heard her say about the sea.
