A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The steward had sent the bowmen out onto the moor for nine days, and every one came back with an empty quiver and a story about the wind. So when the lord's cousin rode up to Caddow Keep with his hounds and his complaints, the old woman at the postern gate only shook her head and went to fetch the girl who kept the goats.

Her name was Ysolt. She had no bow, only a hazel rod she used to drive the goats through the gap in the wall. She took a single length of ash, notched it, and carved along the shaft the pattern her grandmother had cut into the lintel above the well: a point, then a stack of diamonds one inside another, then chevrons pointing down like rain. "The wind does not care what you aim at," her grandmother used to say, "only what you have made." Ysolt walked to the roofless chapel where the fog lay thickest, drew, and let the arrow go into the grey without watching where it fell.
It came down in the bog pool below the castle, and the water rose clean and cold where it struck. The men who waded in found the spring that had dried up the year the tower fell, bubbling out from under a flat stone. The arrow stood upright in the mud at its mouth, the diamonds above the surface like a row of little windows.
The cousin drank first and was not thanked for it. Ysolt pulled the arrow free, dried it on her skirt, and set it back in the lintel where her grandmother had always kept it. The goats drink there still, and the chevrons point down into the water.
