We accept you lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a forearm with the words WE ACCEPT YOU in widely spaced, uppercase sans-serif capitals in dark ink. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the text runs diagonally from the elbow towards the wrist. The wearer's white shirt sleeve and a second person's hand holding the wrist sit in soft focus behind the arm.

Dear Marguerite, the kettle is on and I've put the good biscuits out, the ginger ones your father used to hide behind the tea caddy. What I wanted to tell you is about the bus stop on Harrow Lane. There was a young lad there with a rucksack full of paperbacks, and he kept looking at the shelter poster like it might bite him. It was one of those council notices about the library closing. I asked him if he was all right and he said he was waiting for someone who wasn't coming. I said that's a miserable way to spend a Thursday. He laughed, and then he rolled up his sleeve to show me the writing on his arm, small black capitals running down towards his wrist, WE ACCEPT YOU, and told me his mum had chosen the words for him, after the year he'd had at school. I didn't know what to say, so I said it was very neat lettering and the spacing was lovely.

When his friend came round the corner, she took hold of his wrist without even looking, the way you'd grab a child crossing the road. I thought of you then, and the time you took my hand at the bottom of the stairs in Scarborough. Come for Sunday dinner, love. Bring the girl if you like. There's always room at this table.
