Don't blink script on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small line of black script on the inner wrist, reading don't blink. The lettering is slim and cursive with smooth, even strokes and a soft, slightly grey tone. The plain white fabric backdrop keeps the focus on the wrist, with the tattoo placed in the centre of the frame.

He slid a passport under the gap. The photograph was him, twenty years younger, with the same tilt to the chin. The date of birth was the morning her own mother had first gone into labour, a coincidence she would have laughed off on any other shift. She wrote it in the margin of her log in pencil, small, and felt the weight of him watching her hand move.
"You're not going to blink," he said. It wasn't a question. He pushed back his left cuff, and there on the inside of his wrist, in slim grey script, were three words her grandmother used to say over the kitchen sink: don't blink, love, or the light goes out of the room.
Ruth's eyes burned. She thought of the sergeant, the queue of lorry drivers, the rain starting on the tarmac. She thought of the pencil in the margin. Then she blinked, once, and the booth lamp flickered.
When she looked again the glass was empty. The passport lay open on the counter, the entry stamp already inked with tomorrow's date, and beneath it, in her own careful pencil, someone had written: welcome back.
