They had all been in the same Year Eleven form. Mr Pellow had taught them English, and he had once made them copy a lyric off the wall of the music room, a line he swore would outlive every one of their exam results. He had painted it there himself in white emulsion on a Saturday, letters two hands tall: WE CAN BE HEROES. Denise had thought it soppy. Mick had thought it was about him.

She did. She had forgotten until then that she was the one who held the torch while he climbed the ladder to stuff a tea towel into the gutter.

"Pellow said it was a dare," he said. "I always thought it was a promise."

She looked down at the squash going flat in its paper cup and found she had no clever answer, only the torch, still cold in her hand.
