The image is in warm sepia-toned greyscale, with a striped vest strap at the left and a pale, softly blurred background.

Dear Nell,

The flour came in late again, so I've been up since three with my hands in the trough and the oven ticking as it warms. Mr Okafor's typewriter has a sticking key, which I've come to think is the most honest thing in the shop. I'm typing this on it because my pen can't keep up with the thoughts I have at this hour, and because a typewriter at least makes its meaning plain.

Your father's cap is still hanging by the proving shelf. You asked whether I'd taken it down, and I haven't. Every morning I type the same lines on a strip of paper and tape it beside the till for the girls to read before the first loaf comes out: Have the courage to live. Anyone can die. They think it's a baker's joke, a bit of grim cheer to keep the queue moving. Mrs Pryce says it's morbid. She buys a currant bun every day regardless.

I'm not writing to frighten anyone. I'm writing because you stopped answering in March, and I've been wondering whether you'd rather I sent something braver than my usual moaning about the yeast. So here it is. Come home for the harvest fair. Bring the good scissors and the blue coat you never wear. The bread will be out by six and the window will be full of light.

Your loving aunt, before the oven timer goes, Margaret
