Butterfly, flower and vines on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A foot with a tattoo of a butterfly with patterned wings, a large lily-style flower and curling vine linework running from the ankle towards the toes. The flower and butterfly are shaded in grey tones with soft gradients, while the vines are fine dark outlines. The foot rests on a dark textured towel, with the toes filling the lower part of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The night the lily opened in the Ashworth Street glasshouse, the whole of Salford was asleep except for the trams and me. Mr Pyle had told us the Lilium on the back bench would not flower before August, so I came in at eleven with a torch and my flask, meaning only to check the watering. Instead I found the bud split open like a closed fist finally letting go, grey-white in the lamplight and heavy with a smell like wet pennies and honey.
Then the butterfly came. It was grey too, patterned on the wings like an old wallpaper sample, and it walked along the vine Mr Pyle had trained up the iron pillar, stopping at each curl as though reading the scrollwork. I did not move. I think I held my breath until the glass fogged. It settled on the biggest petal and stayed there while a tram rang out on the bridge.
I am writing because I have decided to stop waiting for spring to tell you things. The plant is yours now, if you want it. Mr Pyle is retiring and the council will sell the lot. I have wrapped the root ball in newspaper and put it in the crate by the back door, with the label in your handwriting so you will know it.
Take the cuttings before the frost. And if the butterfly comes back, do not chase it. Just leave the back door open a crack and let the night in.
Love, Nell
