Whale tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large whale swims along the upper arm, running from the shoulder area towards the elbow, with its tail near the shoulder and its head extended down the arm. The whale is shaded in smooth greys with fine stippled dotwork and scattered pale dots that suggest bubbles or light in water. The image is a close, slightly angled shot of the back and arm, with the tattoo as the clear focus against a dark background.

The rain has been coming sideways off the estuary since five, and by eight the tarpaulins over the Penhallow quay market sag with it. You stand at the back of Ruth Abernethy's stall, between crates of mackerel and a tray of horn buttons, turning over the thing she has told you not to sell: a scrimshaw tooth, yellowed at the root, scored with a whale that is nearly finished. The carver ran out of nerve before the tail, she says. You tell her you can finish it. She laughs at you, and you decide to count that as a yes.

For three weeks you work at the bench in the back of the net loft, a lamp hung on a nail and the tooth clamped in a vice wrapped in sailcloth. You learn that a whale in deep water is mostly not drawn at all. You build it from dots, hundreds of them, the lightest stipple along the belly where the light gives out and heavier along the flank where the old scars are. Every evening the rain on the slates sounds like something large breathing out through the roof.

On the last night the tail lands clean. You lift the tooth to the lamp and the lines seem to shift, the pale dots lifting off the back like bubbles rising through green water. When you look up the loft is gone, the nets are gone, and you are standing on wet cobbles with the tooth cold in your palm as a stone from the sea. Ruth is at the end of the quay with her hood up, watching the harbour mouth. She does not turn round. She only holds out her hand, palm up, the way you would for a coin you already owe.
