Realistic forest sleeve on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo covers the upper arm with a dense woodland scene of bare twigs and branches, a large pinecone, and oak leaves. Fine shading and highlights give the branches and cone scale a realistic, three-dimensional look. Browns, tans and muted greens dominate the composition, with green foliage appearing at the lower edge of the arm and the scene wrapping around the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ashby had been lying under the hide since half three, a blanket of cut bracken over his shoulders and brown netting pulled tight across his face. The wood had no sound yet beyond the drip from the oaks and the tick of cooling iron in the old keeper's gate. He had learned long ago that the trick was to stop being a man and become something the wood had already decided to ignore: a stump, a fallen limb, a shadow laid between two trunks.

At ten to five a figure came up the ride without a torch. Ashby knew the walk before he knew the face, the short, impatient stride of his brother Cal, who had never once in twenty years been on time for anything. Cal stopped at the split beech where the boundary post used to stand and set something down on the flat stone. Then he turned and went back the way he had come, and the rain started again.

Ashby waited until the light turned the colour of weak tea. When he crawled out, stiff and furious, the thing on the stone was a pinecone, closed tight against the damp, with a single oak leaf pushed between its scales like a folded note. He turned the leaf over. Pencilled on the underside in Cal's cramped capitals was one word: LOWER.

He looked down the slope toward the lower wood, where the river ran brown and the ground fell away to the orchard fence. Somebody had already gone that way, and only one person had ever learned from him how to stand still among the branches. Ashby pocketed the cone and started down after them, stepping where the leaves lay thickest.
