White birds in flight over purple clouds on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm in a sleeve of white bird silhouettes in flight, set against layered clouds. The clouds are shaded softly in purple, lavender, blue and teal with blended edges, giving a wash-like finish. The two photographs show the same arm from the front and the back, with a plain light background.

The tarmac gives out a mile past the cattle grid, and you pull the van onto the gravel because Ada always said to stop wherever the light turns purple. She has been gone eleven weeks and still bosses you from the passenger seat of your head. So you stop. Heat ticks off the bonnet. Over the ridge the cloud bank has gone the colour of bruised plums, lavender at its edges, teal where the last sun slips through.

Birds come up out of the dry wash below, a loose white skein of them, wings flat and sharp as cut paper. They climb the updraught and seem to swim through the cloud rather than under it. You count nine, lose count, then find eleven. You think of the shoebox of her postcards in the glovebox, every one addressed to a stranger in a town neither of you ever visited, every one signed with the same two initials.
A lorry grinds past without slowing, and the wind it leaves lifts the dust into a pale sheet. When it settles the birds have gone higher, and the cloud has drawn a long lilac seam across the west. You unscrew the flask, pour the tea she insisted on, and set the cup on the bonnet for the wind to take its share.
You drive on at dark with the window down. Somewhere past the next grid you realise you have not once checked the mirror for her. The road ahead is empty and pale, and the sky above it keeps moving without asking anyone's permission.
