The generator cut out in the middle of the speeches, which Gran later declared the first sign of anything. The marquee went black except for the fairy lights strung through the pear trees, and somebody at the back said "Oh no" loudly enough for the whole field to hear. Dev had spent six weeks on the playlist and a fortnight arguing with the caterers about lighting gels. He wanted the walls washed in deep blue and violet, the colours of a nebula he'd shown Priya on his phone the night he proposed, a cloud of gas he called a stellar nursery. "Stars are born in the dark," he'd told her, and she'd said it was the most romantic thing a man in a fleece had ever said to her. Now the gels were dead, the guests stood in wet grass with their prosecco, and everyone squinted up.

Priya stood at the edge of the lawn with her train over one arm and said nothing for so long I thought she was cross. Then she laughed. Above the oak the Milky Way ran across the sky like spilt flour, a river of dust you never see from the edge of Reading. Dev pointed out the faint smudge beside the handle of the Plough and admitted it looked nothing like the glossy poster, just a fuzzy thumbprint on the dark. Priya took his hand and said she wouldn't change his stars for a better sky.

The generator coughed back to life twenty minutes later and the blue returned to everyone's faces. By then Dev had switched on his phone torch and was pointing it at the grass, where a cloud of confetti had landed, and the two of them were kneeling in it, counting the sparkles.
