White floral design on a bride's shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A bride's bare shoulder and upper arm carry a white floral design of large blossoms, leaves and curling scroll lines. The linework is fine and lace-like, and the white ink stands out softly against the skin. The design sits in the centre-right of the frame, with a blurred wine glass, a white glove and a lace veil in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the Halloran Brothers Circus came off the A30 in March with its canvas patched in three colours and nobody left who could mend the big top. My mother had sewn that tent for thirty years, but by then her hands shook over a needle, so she handed the work to me and to Auntie Vi, who had once made lace in Honiton before the town stopped buying it.

Vi drew the patterns on brown paper at the kitchen table: peonies the size of saucers, leaves that curled back on themselves like wood shavings, and long scrolls she said were there to lead the eye away from the seams. She worked them in white thread on the sleeves of the high-wire woman's costume, and the stitches were so fine you had to tilt the sequins to find them under the spotlight.

Lottie Sayle never once looked down at those sleeves when she went up the rope. She said the lace was for the people in the cheap seats, who could never see her face anyway. When takings fell short in Penzance, the ringmaster sold the poles to a farmer for hay, and the final show was given in a car park under sodium lamps.

Afterwards Vi folded the costume into tissue and hung it on a nail in the empty wagon. I still go in sometimes to check on it. The white blossoms have gone the colour of weak tea, but every scroll is still there, and the light through the gap in the boards lands on them each afternoon as if someone had only just finished the last stitch.
