French script quote down the spine
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind, with her hair in an updo and a beaded hair clip, shows a long vertical line of cursive script tattooed down her neck and spine. The lettering is fine and grey-black, and parts of the French text are legible, including a reference to l'Éternel. The soft, warm composition is framed by an ivory lace dress with a deep open back.

Sit down, the lot of you, and leave that cake alone until I've finished, because this is the one about the scribe of Plougastel and the blotting paper, and I am not telling it twice. Pierre Lenoir wrote letters for the whole coast, for fishermen who could not hold a pen without it looking like a crab had got into the inkwell. Every Sunday they came up the lane with their coppers and their bad news, and every Sunday Pierre wrote it out clean, in a hand so careful the priest once asked him to teach his nephew.

The winter the Marie-Jo went out past the rocks, it was Hélène Kervella who came to his door. She had no words for her son, only the outline of them, and she stood on his step turning her shawl in her fingers until the lamp behind him guttered. He sat her down. He wrote what she could say, and when she could not say it he wrote what she meant, and at the end, where a mother would put her name, he wrote in the old looping hand that the boy should come home mis dans la main de l'Éternel, into the hand of the Eternal, which is a long way to travel for a short letter.
The letter was never posted. The boat came back on the spring tide with her sail patched in three colours, and the boy climbed the lane with salt in his hair and asked who had written such a foolish thing to be sent to a boat. Pierre never told him. He kept the blotting paper instead, pressed flat in his ledger, the words printed backwards on it in grey.
So when you ask me what the blotting paper says, I will tell you it says what it needed to. Now pass me that cake, and mind the knife.
