White ink mandala on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala in white ink sits on the forearm, built from layered petals, scallops and concentric rings around a central medallion. The fine lines and hatched detail show only as a pale, raised-looking pattern against the reddened skin. The design fills most of the frame against a dark, leather-look background.

Ione had been promised the window at Lamar Depot would hold for two hundred years, which was why she was on her knees at four in the morning, scraping salt-frost from the lattice with a bone-handled brush. The dome's glass had fogged in the cold, and the old rosette was going faint where the etching had been cut too shallow. Above her, the Ceres relay blinked its slow red count.

Her grandmother had taught her the pattern the way she taught everything, with her hands. Start at the centre medallion, a ring of seventeen spokes, then work outward through the petals, each layer a little wider than the last, each scallop following a breath behind. "You don't draw it," Nan had said, pressing the brush into her palm. "You let the light show you where it wants to be lines." Nobody on the rota could say who first cut it into the glass, only that it had always been there, pale on the grey, catching the dawn when the shift changed.
By the time she reached the outer ring, the maintenance board chimed. A pressure seal on the east corridor had failed, and the Ledger wanted the cracked pane replaced by noon. Ione looked at the blank replacement, then at her half-finished petals, and understood that new glass would be clear, and clear glass takes no pattern. She could cut the rosette into it herself with the spare diamond point, or let the corridor stand in plain light.
She chose the cutting. She worked the last scallop as the sun rose over the ice, and when the light finally came through the lattice it laid the whole mandala across the corridor floor, pale on pale, so that everyone who walked that way for the next two centuries would have to step inside it.
