Black mandala tattoo on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala tattoo covers the outside of a forearm, with a dense black centre, rings of petal shapes and a scalloped outer edge. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and solid black fills, with the light skin left open between the petals. The photo is taken at standing height, with the subject's shorts and pink flip-flops visible below, and a small tattoo on the foot.

The frost came down on the byre window the same night the heifer calved early, and by morning Dad had gone quiet over the feed bins. I wiped a clear patch with my sleeve and found the glass had grown its own pattern, a rosette of fern fronds around a dark knot where the cold had bitten deepest.

Nan had a sampler of that shape, stitched in black silk on linen above the Rayburn at Cold Harbour Farm, with rings of petals running out to a scalloped edge. She called it the wheel that holds the year still. Every winter she unpicked one petal and restitched it, and I never asked why, because she'd have said it was her business and the hens' business and nobody else's.

When she died in February, the sampler went into a drawer with the ledgers. Dad said we'd burn it, then couldn't. I spent a week at the cold kitchen table with a magnifying lens, counting stitches in the centre ring. It came to twelve, then fourteen when I counted from the other side, and I gave up trying to make the numbers agree.

On the last morning of the thaw I carried the sampler out to the gate and laid it over the frosted glass. The rings lined up with the ice petal for petal, and the dark centre sat square over the knot where the cold had been worst. Dad came out with two mugs, looked at the pattern for a long time, and set one mug down on the gatepost without a word.
