White-ink mandala on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A large radial mandala covers the lower leg, with a central flower-like motif surrounded by concentric rings of petals, scrolls and filigree. The linework is fine and light, rendered in white or pale ink on darker skin, so the design reads as a pale outline against the surrounding tone. The composition is symmetrical and fills the frame, with a plaid shirt visible at the left edge.

Nobody at Halden Cross remembered who first drew the sun on the lamp-room door, only that it was done in white chalk, a ring of petals round a bare centre, and that nobody had ever rubbed it out. Sefton Moyle kept the lamp-room for thirty-one years. Each winter he traced the sun again with his thumb, the way other men touch a pocket for their matches.

The fog came in the November the 4.10 went missing. It sat on the cutting so thick that the signal lamps were only smudges and the driver could not see his own fireman. The stationmaster wanted the big lamp lit and the bell rung, but the bell carried no further than the footbridge. Sefton took the oil can up the ladder and told them he would light the sun.
He did not know what he meant until he was on the platform edge with a white cloth in his hand. He wiped the cloth in slow rings through the air, the way the chalk had been drawn, and the fog gave back a pale light at every turn. Out past the points a whistle answered him, thin and shaking. The 4.10 came in on the rings of light, petal after petal, and stopped with its nose a yard from the buffers.
The driver stepped down and walked straight to the lamp-room door without being told. Sefton found the sun gone in the morning, scrubbed off by a porter who thought it was filth. But when he laid his thumb on the wood, the shape was still there, cut into the grain like a path worn by feet.
