Mandala tattoo on the back of a hand

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A large circular mandala with radiating petal shapes covers the back of the hand and extends onto the wrist, where finer line motifs curve into scroll and paisley-like forms. The design is built from dense dotwork shading and clean single lines, giving the mandala a textured, stippled look. The ink is black and grey against the dark background, and the tattoo is shown centred across the hand with the fingers extended.

Dear Hester,

The pattern for the chapel altar cloth is finished at last, though not how Mrs Penhallow wanted it. She asked for roses. I gave her a wheel of petals instead, built from a thousand tiny dots, each one pricked with the brass pin Grandmother used for mending nets. It took nine weeks of evenings. When I held the card up to the lamp, the centre seemed to turn slowly, the way the harbour lamps do when the fog rolls in off the bar.

Father has not spoken to me since I told him the scroll at the edge is a boat's bow, curling up to meet the water. He says lace is for women who have no sea to watch. I told him the sea is in every scallop of it. He said that was precisely his complaint.

The fishwives came down this afternoon to see it spread on the trestle. Ada Crane put one finger on a petal and said the dots felt warm, like a thumbprint left on a window. I did not tell her I had worked the middle ring with the lamp turned low, so I could not see my own mistakes, only feel for them. Some of the dots are not where I meant them. I think they are better there.

The bell goes at six and the Sarah Jane is out past the Nab. Dad's oilskin is still on the peg. If this reaches you before the spring tides, write and tell me the lace has got as far as Lisbon, and that you have seen a sea less grey than ours.

Your loving sister, Bet
