White ink mandala tattoo in a geometric style on a thigh, with stacked radial rosettes and petal patterns across the skin.

White ink mandala tattoo on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two large mandala designs are tattooed in white ink across the upper leg, one above the other, with some overlap at the edges. Fine, even linework builds concentric rings, rosettes, scalloped petals and small teardrop motifs, and the light ink shows only as a pale outline against the skin. The image is cropped tightly to the limb, with a dark border and a blurred background at the sides.

Dear Nell,

The pass was shut again this morning, so I have had time to watch Mrs Akhtar draw on the flat stones behind the hut. She goes out before the light is properly up, a tin of chalk in one pocket and a cup of tea she never finishes in the other. She begins at the centre with a small ring no bigger than a thumbprint, then widens it, ring by ring, until the circle has pushed past the edge of the stone. Every petal is a single careful pass of the chalk, and every teardrop sits in the gap between two petals as if it had been waiting there.

I asked her on Tuesday why she bothers. The rain takes them by noon, she said, and the wind takes what the rain leaves. The pass keeps nothing, so she gives it something to forget. I thought she was being poetic until she showed me the stone beside the hut, where a faint lotus had been worn almost to nothing by three winters of boots. She had drawn it again over the ghost of the last one, petal over petal, and said the second drawing always sits a little truer.

This morning I took the chalk from her tin and tried my own, starting with a ring the width of a coin. My lines wobbled and my petals came out lopsided. She came out with her tea, looked at it for a long moment, and said, "Now it has your hand in it." Then she went back inside without another word.

By the time I came up from the hut the sun had cleared the ridge, and my ring was catching the light, pale and even against the grey. I am leaving it there. Come and see it before the weather does.

Love, Tessa
