White ink lace pattern on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is covered in a dense pattern of floral and mandala-style motifs, including scalloped bands, rosette-like circles and leaf shapes. The linework is fine and solid, rendered in white ink that shows as a lighter tone against the skin. The design runs the length of the arm against a plain pale background, with soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The drawing office smelled of paraffin and cold tea, and the lamp over Mr Dunnage's desk had been turned down to save gas. Ada had until the morning whistle to finish the scallop border for the Carrow order, forty yards of it, every loop drafted on squared paper before the Jacquard cards could be punched. She had drawn the rosettes four times. Each time they came out looking like a bruise.

Her mother had taught her to see a pattern by letting the eye slide off the ground and settle on the holes. 'Lace isn't the thread,' she used to say, 'it's the gaps the thread leaves.' So Ada stopped trying to draw the flowers and began drawing what was missing around them, the pale spaces between, until each rosette rose off the paper as if it had been cut out of the dark.

By four o'clock the border ran the length of the table. The scallops rolled into one another like waves seen from a height, and the leaves hung from their edges, fine as breath on glass. She pinned the last sheet to the wall and stood back to look at it.

Mr Dunnage found her there at six, still in her coat. He ran a thumb along the nearest scallop and said nothing for a long time. Then he took a pencil from behind his ear and wrote a number in the corner: 1. 'That's the one they'll keep,' he said, and went to put the kettle on.
