Wildflower sleeve on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of tall wildflowers and grasses runs up the forearm, with open five-petalled blooms, slender stems and pointed leaves. The linework is fine and even, with light shading in the leaves and petals. The design is in black and grey and fills the forearm toward the elbow, shown against a brick wall and a denim shirt.

The miller's wife had sent the boy out for the third time that week, and still he came back with his hands empty and his boots full of seed heads. Mother Acland said the meadow above Thornwick was not short of blooms, only short of anyone patient enough to count them.

The flowers grew tall in the grass there, with five pale petals on slender stems and leaves as pointed as knife blades. Each stem had to be tied with red thread before the sun touched it, or the bloom would shut for a year and the village would go without its dye. Tobias tied them badly. He tied them fast, because the wood at the field's edge had begun to hum at dusk, and a boy who stayed past the bell was not kept by the wood. He was asked to stay, which was worse.
On the last evening an old woman stood at the hedge with a basket on her arm. She asked him how many stems he had, and he said nine, and she said he had counted wrong. He counted again, slowly, kneeling in the wet grass as his mother had told him, and found eleven. The extra two had been growing at his feet the whole time. She took one for her trouble and told him the other was his to carry home.
He came down into Thornwick before the bell, the bundle held tight against his chest. At sunrise he set the flowers on the mill step, and the light found them one by one, each bloom opening its five petals as if it had only been waiting to be seen. His mother pressed them flat between two slates that night, and she never asked him again where he went.
