Wildflower sprigs in black dotwork

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

Three sprigs of wildflowers are drawn on pale paper, including daisy-like heads, tall lavender-style spikes and drooping bell-shaped blooms. The linework is built from stippled dots, giving soft shading on petals, leaves and stems. The drawing is entirely black ink on white, with the sprigs arranged loosely across the page.

You are halfway up the tip before the whistle goes, and the shale slides under your boots like something alive. Your mother gave you a paper bag and one instruction: come back when it is full of something other than coal. The pit has been dead since March. The heap it left behind is grey and bare, yet the daisies have come up through it anyway, sturdy as buttons, their petals fanned out like the spokes of a cartwheel.

Along the ridge the lavender spikes stand in ragged rows. Nobody planted them. Mr Pryce at the chapel says the seeds rode in on pit boots and the feathers of finches, and you suppose that is as good an explanation as any. Under the spikes the bell flowers hang on thin stalks, nodding every time the wind comes off the valley, and you crouch to watch them tremble the way the cage lifts used to shake the ground before a shift.

When you get home the bag holds three daisies, a bell sprig and one hard, furred lavender head. Your father is at the table, still grey at the knuckles from a week of scrubbing. He turns the bag over, tips the flowers onto the oilcloth, and says nothing for so long that the clock fills the room. Then he takes the daisy with the most petals and tucks it behind the band of his cap, where the coal dust never quite reaches.
