Fine line drawing of wildflowers on stems
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows several stylised wildflowers with open, spiky blooms and small buds on tall, thin stems. Curling tendrils and a few leaves sit between the stems, which cross and overlap in a loose, open arrangement. It is rendered in single black outlines on white with no shading or colour, and the composition is centred and airy.

You find the wildflowers first, the ones that push up through the cracks in the slipway at Gullhaven every August, stems bending out over the wall as if they have been caught somewhere they should not be. Your grandmother called them fireweed, though the seed catalogue on the dresser said otherwise, and she would never let you pick them. Bring that in and the sea comes with it, she said, and she meant the salt on the sills and the damp in the bread.

The summer you turn twelve, the harbourmaster's boy, Teddy Rowe, dares you to climb the breakwater at low tide. You go because the tendrils on the rocks curl like the springs of a clock, and because from the top you can see the whole bay laid out like a drawing someone has not finished. Teddy slips on the weed and you hold his wrist until the tide turns, and neither of you says thank you, which is how it should be.
Years later the boats are sold and the slipway is tarmacked over, but the flowers still come, bristled and spiky, nodding over the new kerb. You bring a pair of shears down on the first warm morning and cut one stem, then another, and carry them up the hill in a jam jar. Your grandmother's kitchen is empty now. You set the jar on the sill anyway and open the window to let the sea in.
