Winged angel statue with banner and TARDIS

Black and grey · Flash

A black and grey drawing of a weathered stone angel statue with large feathered wings, its face blank-eyed and downcast. A banner wraps around the figure's torso and bears the phrases Don't Turn Your Back, Don't Look Away and Don't Blink, with a TARDIS police box set in the centre. The linework is fine and engraved, with cross-hatched shading on the wings and stone, set against a solid black background.

Gather in, closer now, the lantern's only just caught. No, Dolly, you stay where you are, I can see you peeking round your mum's coat. Right. Now the angel. Not the painted one on the big wheel, but the stone one at the back of Harrowgate's tent, the one with the chipped wing that nobody has ever paid a penny to see.

Old Ada Pennock bought it off a churchyard mason in 1923 for the price of a horse and a sack of coal. She stood it on the midway between the hook-a-duck and the toffee apples, and every night she said the same three things to anyone who'd listen. Don't turn your back on it. Don't look away. And whatever you do, don't blink.

Nobody believed her until the Tuesday the boy from the sweet stall went to fetch a bag of sugar. He turned his back for the length of a breath. When he turned round, the angel had shifted a yard nearer the tent flap, and its wings were folded tighter, as if it were tucking itself in against the cold. Its stone eyes had gone soft and blank, and its face was turned towards the boy's empty stall.

Ada laughed and said it was the blue box that did it. Some nights, if you're quick, you'll see a police box that wasn't there when you came in, standing dark beside the candy floss. Go on, walk up and try the door. Ada said the last lad who did came out again, but he never once looked back, and his sugar bag is still sitting on the stall, unopened, waiting for him to come and fetch it.
