Winged butterfly with red and orange swirls
Neo-trad · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised butterfly with its wings open, shaded in black with red and orange highlights that blend into the wing panels. Thick dark outlines and curling tendrils extend beyond the wings, with feathered, painterly shading along the wing edges. The palette is mostly black and deep red with orange accents, set against pale skin in a close, slightly angled view.

Sit nearer the grate, the lot of you, and mind the tin on the hearth. This is the one about the Scarr Lane butterfly, and my mother swore on her Bible it was true, though she'd also swear the kettle was bewitched if it sulked.

It was the summer the dye works closed, when the whole valley smelt of scorched sugar and wet slate. Albert Crabtree was eleven and kept a jam jar with holes punched in the lid, and in it he kept the strangest thing that ever came off the chimney stacks: a butterfly as black as a coal shovel, its wings edged in a red that looked wet, and at the tips a curl of orange like the last breath of a fire. It did not flutter so much as smoulder. When the light went, the jar glowed.
Old Mrs Pell, who had stirred the vats for forty years, took one look through the glass and went white. "That's madder red," she said, "and that's the last of the soot from the boiler house. Let it out, boy, before it takes a fancy to your bed." He wouldn't. He said it was his, and it sang at night, a thin sound like a wire in the wind.
On the Sunday the works gates were chained, Albert climbed the water tower with the jar under his jumper and opened the lid. The butterfly went up in a long slow spiral, trailing ribbons of red across the sky, and every window in Scarr Lane lit gold for a moment. Then it was gone over the moor.
Next morning there were scorch marks on his bedroom sill in the shape of two open wings, and the jar was still warm. Mrs Pell said that was how you knew it had gone home.
