Two orange butterflies with swirls on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two orange butterflies with black outlines and veining, one smaller and set to the upper left of a larger one. Black swirling linework and tendril shapes with small dots trail around the wings and across the lower area. The orange and yellow ink is fully saturated against black outlines and shading, and the design sits on the side of the thigh against a plain black background.

The rain had come in sideways off the moor by eleven, and Nell Haworth was still stacking the last of the silk remnants under her awning when the boy from the bakery stall ran past with a paper bag over his head. She had a dozen bolts of orange cloth she could not sell in this weather, and a tin of gold thread that had gone damp at the seam.

Her uncle had dyed the cloth himself, boiling onion skins and marigold heads in the back kitchen until the whole row smelled like a bonfire. He used to say the colour was the only honest thing on the market. Nobody argued with a monarch's wing, he said, because nobody could make one. Nell kept the recipe in a pocket notebook, its pages swollen from years of wet fingers.
Near closing, a stranger in a grey oilskin stopped at her stall and asked for a yard of the bright orange. She cut it without asking why. He paid in coins warm from his pocket, then unfolded the cloth on the wet table and, with a stub of charcoal, began drawing on the back of a receipt: two wings, a thin body, and above them a curl of wind like hair lifting off a face. "They always come back to the same field," he said. "Two of them, every year, one a little behind the other."
When the tarpaulins were down, Nell found the receipt tucked under her notebook. Beneath the drawing he had written a single line: keep the smaller one close, the larger one knows the way. She folded it in beside the recipe and walked home through the puddles, the orange silk heavy and bright under her arm.
