Winged Egyptian-style motif on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, showing a black and grey tattoo of a winged central figure with a symmetrical, Egyptian-inspired design, placed between the shoulder blades. The linework is crisp and the wings are shaded with grey tones. The black strappy dress forms a pentagram-like pattern across the back, and the background is softly out of focus.

Dear Tom,

The pit wheel has stopped again, so I'm writing at the kitchen table with the lamp lit at two in the afternoon, which is the only way the men here learn to be patient. Your parcel came on Tuesday. Mrs Gill from the post office held it up as if it might go off, and I had to sign twice because the stamps were from Alexandria and she wanted to see the paper from Cairo.

Inside was the drawing. You'd done it in pencil on the back of a survey sheet, the wings spread wide over a sun disc, a column down the middle, both sides matching so exactly that I folded the paper to check. Dad would have called it heathen nonsense and then stood looking at it for an hour. I pinned it above the mantel beside his brass lamp check, number 114, and they look alright together.

Here is what I haven't told Mother. The foreman came round on Monday asking after you, because the club has a whip-round for the widows and he wanted to know if you'd want your name on the list. I said you were a digger now, out in the sand, and that you'd write when there was something to write. He laughed and said sand was less dangerous than coal, and I didn't argue, though I kept thinking about those wings and how a cage needs something to hold it up when the cable starts to sing.

Write back soon. Tell me what the stone says. Tell me if it's true those figures carry the dead across the water, because if it is, I'd like to know who you think is carrying Dad.

Love, Nell
