Eye in triangle and 'be strong girl' lettering

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A side view of a person in a grey tank top and mesh bra, showing two black tattoos. On the upper arm, an eye sits inside an outlined triangle, with small lines of text stacked around the outside of the triangle. On the ribs, the words 'I AM' sit above 'be strong girl' in small, thin black lettering. The work is black ink on skin against a plain light background.

The councillor's man wanted the old gilt gone by Friday. Pruitt & Sons had hung over the fish shop since 1921, and the letters had gone the colour of weak tea, but Ada Mercer knew gilt would not forgive a scraper. She set out her brushes on the tailgate of the van, tied her hair back with a bootlace, and told him she would sand it back to the grain or not at all.

She worked the way her father had taught her, starting with the small things. The serifs first, then the hairlines that gave a word its breath, then the body of each letter. Halfway through the second P she felt the board give slightly under her mahl stick, and she saw a pencil mark beneath the varnish: a triangle, a little wonky, with an eye inside it. Her father had drawn it there the summer she was nine, when she had sulked for a week after he sold her bicycle. He told her the eye was for the men out past the breakwater, so they could see the harbour from wherever they were.

By four o'clock the new name was laid out in black enamel on a cream ground, PRUITT'S, with the S a shade too rounded, the way she always made it. The councillor's man came round with his phone out to photograph it. He said it looked very traditional. Ada said nothing. When he had gone she leaned over the board with a fine liner and drew, very small, in the bottom corner where the grain of the wood ran into the paint, a triangle with an eye inside it. Nobody on the front ever looked that low.
