Winged figure tribal design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical winged figure with arms raised or held close to the body, drawn in solid black tribal-style shapes. The wings are built from sharp, layered feather strokes, and the body tapers into flowing, flame-like tails. The design is centred on a plain white background with curling side swirls that extend the composition horizontally.

The ewes were dropping their lambs into the drifts at Low Scar, and by the second week of January Tom Eskdale had stopped counting the dead ones aloud. His mother would not let him burn the bracken in the yard. She said the frost was listening.

On the sixth night a woman came down off the fell with the wind behind her. Her wings were folded close as a shawl, and from her back streamed a long tail of fire that did not melt the snow it passed over. Tom had the lantern in one hand and the shovel in the other. He asked her what she wanted. She looked at the lambs steaming in the straw and said she wanted the lamp left burning in the byre until the thaw, and nobody to ask her why.

He agreed, because the alternative was watching another ewe go stiff in the snow. He trimmed the wick every hour and sat up with a flask of tea. Each night the flames at her back grew a little shorter, and the frost on the window grew thinner, scratched into the shape of feathers. By March the beck was loud again and the lambs were bleating from every corner of the field.

When the last hard frost came, Tom went out to the byre and found the lantern cold and a single black feather laid across the hay, as long as his forearm and sharp at the edges. He carried it up to the farmhouse and hung it over the door, where it still hangs. His mother said that was the right place for it. Nobody at Low Scar has ever asked why the lambs come out so strong.
