Tribal bird with spread wings
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical bird with outstretched wings is drawn in solid black tribal-style shapes on a white background. The wings and tail are built from bold, tapering spikes and curved bands, with the body and head at the centre. The design uses only black ink with no shading or colour.

You had been told never to wind the bird after midnight, and so of course you did, with the lantern guttering on its hook above the Hall of Wonders and the last of the generator grumbling behind the dodgems. Mrs Pargeter's brass key was cold in your palm. The bird sat in its crate of straw on the trestle, black wings folded like a fan of iron spikes, and its eye was a single round glass bead that caught the light as though it had been waiting.

Fairground folk talk about the bird the way sailors talk about a bad ship. It came off a boat from Antwerp in the spring with a crate of mirrors, and nobody remembered ordering it. Tobias, who ran the coconut shy, swore it had been painted by a man who only ever drew on the backs of tickets, all those tight barbed curves that never quite touched. You liked that about it. Nothing on the bird wasted a line.
The key clicked round, twelve turns, fourteen. The wings rose one spike at a time, the way a fan opens in church, until the whole black span of them filled the tent from pole to pole. Outside, somebody's radio was playing a waltz to nobody. You heard the crate boards crack under the straw and understood, too late to be sensible, that the bird had never been packed in the first place. It had only been resting between towns.
At first light the trucks rolled out past the church field, and the bird went with them, a shadow crossing the frost on the hedgerow. Mrs Pargeter found your key on the trestle in the morning, still warm, and the straw in the crate lay perfectly smooth, as if nothing had ever stirred in it. She said nothing at all. She only tucked the key into her apron and went to see about the horses.
