Winged griffin on the back of the neck
Neo-trad · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A winged, griffin-like creature with clawed forelegs is tattooed across the back of the neck, facing left with its wings raised behind it. Heavy black outlines define the feathers, mane and body, with light, mostly unshaded areas inside. Pink and red washes sit over the wing and chest, and the composition fills the nape and upper back with the figure's head near the hairline.

Nobody in Halse Gap liked the griffin, but everybody crossed beneath its wings. It sat on the arch of the customs house like a wet cat that had swallowed a lamp, feathers picked out in soot, a rust-red smear across its breast where the paint had run in the rain of 1931. My mother said it was the last thing the old count paid for before the bank took the rest. I was nine and believed her.

The winter I turned seventeen, the post office lost its roof and the mail came up by donkey instead. I was the one who carried it. Every Thursday the griffin watched me climb with its stone eyes half closed, and every Thursday I told it the village news: the Soriano brothers had bought a lorry, the schoolmistress had run off with a surveyor, the snow would come early. It never answered. I preferred it that way.
In February a man in a grey coat came up on foot with a leather case too heavy for his shoulders. He asked for the frontier stone and I pointed at the wing. He laughed and said the stone was on the other side. I should have walked on. Instead I asked what was in the case, and he opened it: letters, dozens, tied with string, each addressed to a house on my side of the mountain in my grandfather's handwriting.
I carried them down in my coat and delivered every one. The griffin still watches the pass, though nobody has repainted it since. Some Thursdays I stand beneath it and read the postmarks aloud, the way you would tell a dog the news, and the red on its breast looks a little brighter each time.
