Phoenix across the upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A phoenix rises across the upper back, with a patterned head and wings in orange, red and yellow, outlined in black. Flowing black swirls and flame-like feathers trail down towards the lower shoulder blade. The bold colour fills the bird and feathers, while the fine black linework and decorative detailing give the design its structure against the skin.

The baker's wife in Coldharbour Fold banked her ovens every night for thirty winters, and every night a bird sat on the chimney pot to watch her do it. Nobody else in the village saw it. Her husband called it soot, but soot does not have a crest like a fern or a tail that trails down the roof in ribbons of red. She stopped arguing and left the back door on the latch.

One February the great oven went out in the small hours. A draught came down the flue, the dough sank in its tins, and by four o'clock the whole lane smelled of cold wheat. The bird came down the chimney in a rush of soot and settled on the brick lip of the mouth. Its wings were the colour of embers at dusk, edged in black lace. It looked at the dead ash, then at her, and she understood she was being asked something.
She knelt, put her hands in the cold grate and said plainly that she had no fire left to give. The bird lifted one wing. Feathers came loose and drifted into the oven, orange, red and yellow, each one catching the way a spark catches on dry straw. By dawn the brick was hotter than it had ever been, and the first loaves came out with crusts so gold the miller's boy stood in the doorway and would not come in.
The bird was gone by morning. On the flour sack lay a single black-tipped feather, still warm. She kept it in the tin with the yeast, and every winter after, when the village fires faltered, she shook the tin once and the ovens woke. When she died they found the tin empty, and a thumbprint of ash on the oven door, shaped like a wing.
