Winged heart padlock with key design
Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a heart-shaped padlock with ornate filigree detailing and a keyhole at its centre, with feathered wings curling around it. A ribbon trails down from the lock to an ornate key at the bottom of the sheet. The design is drawn in brown-black ink on aged, parchment-coloured paper, with a pencil and eraser placed beside it.

The padlock came across my bench on a wet Tuesday in February, wrapped in a handkerchief the colour of weak tea, and Mr Pardoe told me not to touch it until he had finished his pipe. I did touch it, of course. It was heavier than it looked, a heart of brass with filigree crawling over its face like frost on a window, and at its centre a keyhole no bigger than a grain of rice. Someone had soldered wings to its shoulders, feather by feather, and they curled round the metal as if the lock were trying to fly and had been told no.

"Forty years I've kept this shop," Pardoe said, "and I've never had a customer ask me to open a thing they wanted kept shut."
The woman who brought it had left a name and a ribbon, nothing else. The key, she said, had gone into the Humber off the end of the Alexandra Dock, along with her husband's good coat and most of his opinions. She wanted the lock opened, not broken. She wanted whatever was inside to stay where it was, only reachable.
It took me nine evenings. I filed a key from a blank, its bow a loop of scrolls to match the lock's own pattern, its bit cut to a shape I could not find in any catalogue. On the tenth night it turned with a sound like a held breath let go. Inside the heart there was no letter and no photograph, only a single grey feather folded over a slip of paper that read, in careful pencil: you were always the one who kept the key.
