Mandala owl tattoo design sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing of an owl with its face and wings filled with ornamental mandala-style patterns, including a central flower motif. The linework is black and uniform, with dense detailing in the wings and scrolling lines around the body. Two black markers sit at the top right of the sheet against a plain white background.

Dear Marguerite, the owl came back to the signal box last night, the way you said it would if I kept leaving the lamp lit. I have stopped arguing with you about things like that. Mr Haddow from the goods yard says it is only a tawny looking for mice in the sleepers, but he has never sat up through a winter shift with a tin of cocoa and a pencil, so what would he know.

I spent the first hour of my break trying to draw it properly on the back of a timetable. Every feather wanted a flower in it. I kept fitting little rosettes into the wing where the lines should have been plain, and by the time the 4.40 went through I had a sheet covered in spirals that looked more like a carpet than a bird. The guard leaned out and asked if I was doing sums. I said I was doing patience, and he laughed the way men do when they don't believe you.
The odd thing is that when I finally inked the face the lines went quiet and sat still, the way the rails do when the frost has got into them. The mandala in the middle opened up like a clock face nobody had to wind. I thought of you pinning your own drawings above the kettle in Crewe, all those circles that never quite closed.
I'm sending this with the drawing folded inside, so you can tell me where I've gone wrong. Keep the lamp lit at the window for me. If the owl turns up on your side, let it stay.
