The gull had taken the third lantern from the breakwater before Mabel Crane thought to ask the sea what it wanted. Her father had cut the stone himself from the old lens of the Scarrow light, when the port men said it was fit only for the rubble heap, and he had set it in a heart of hammered silver with a crown above and two wings sprung out sideways like a swallow's tail. He called it a keeper. Nobody in Scarrow Haven used that word lightly, not since the bar had taken three brothers from the Reeve family in one February gale.

The heart would not sit on a chain. Every time Mabel fastened the loop, the wings turned towards the water and the gem went cold as a dropped penny. Her father said it wanted a ring at its foot before it would hang true, so she went down the slipway at low tide with a bent nail and the little silver ring he had forgotten on the bench. The fishermen gathered on the wall to watch a girl push a brooch into the mud and mutter at it. Old Tobias Reeve laughed until he saw the gem catch the pier lamp and throw a pale road out across the bar, straight to a dinghy still beyond the buoy.

The dinghy came in on that light. So did the next, and the one after, until the last boat of the night was tied up with its crew sitting quiet in the stern. Mabel hung the keeper on a hook above the chandlery door, ring down, so that it swung towards the harbour whenever the wind came off the land.

Her father never asked how she had known the wings wanted to face the sea. She never told him that the gem had not been dark when she lifted it from the bench. It had only been waiting for someone to put it back where the light could find it.
