Dear Oona, the rotation bell has rung twice since you took the shuttle down to the spoke, and the hydroponic ring is still holding its breath. I am writing this on the back of the seed manifest because the ledger is locked in the drum room until the thaw, and I have stopped trusting my memory with anything I do not put on paper.

Ansel finished the hub plate the week before the dust storm. He laid the pattern out with brass dividers, so every petal on the ring is the same as the one opposite it, and the scalloped bands step outward like the rings of a tree that cannot decide whether to stop. The dots around the rim are where the grit struck the outer skin on the long crossing. He marked each one so we could count the years by them, and the count has kept us honest for three generations.

Last night I counted them again and got one more dot than I expected. I sat with the lamp until my eyes stung, then I went through the logs and found the entry: a year nobody wrote down because the bell cracked that winter. Ansel knew. That is why he left the middle circle empty, with its fine hatching around the edge but nothing inside, so the hatch could be opened without anyone having to decide what it meant.

When the thaw comes, bring the dividers back to the hub. The light will come through that empty circle and fall on the floor in one clean disc, and whoever stands in it will be standing exactly where the petals meet. Save me a place. I want to see whether he was right about the count.
