Winged heart with halo pencil design
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of a heart outline with a feathered angel wing on each side and a halo drawn above the top point. The wings are shaded with layered graphite strokes to show feather texture and depth, while the heart and halo are mainly outlined. The image is in greyscale on a plain pale background, centred and fully visible.

The crate came down the Canopic road on a mule cart, and by the time it reached your bench in the scriptorium's back room the feathers had gone stiff with river damp. Master Hesychius lifted them out one at a time with two fingers, as though they might still be warm. "Left wings from the goose yard at Canopus," he said. "Right wings from the cull at Mareotis. Match them or throw them out."

You had cut quills since you were nine, and you knew the trick every apprentice learns: a pen from a single bird holds its curve, while a mismatched pair fights you at every stroke. So you sorted the pile, pinion against pinion, turning each vane toward the light from the high window until the barbs ran the same way. The sun crossed the floor. Copyists murmured over psalms and tax rolls behind you, and the ink pot dried twice before you lifted your head.
Near dusk you found two long primaries, one from each crate, whose tips curled toward each other like a pair of raised hands. You laid them on the slate table tip to tip, and between their bowed shafts opened a clean pale space, narrowing to a point at the bottom. A ring of dust hung in the slanting light above them, and you thought of the painted halo over the saint's door in the church across the square. The master came to look, grumbling, and stood very still.
"Cut them as they are," he said at last, and he took the penknife from his sash and set it beside your hand. You cut the nibs that night and kept the spare shaft in your sleeve. Ink pooled in the hollow of the point, black as a shadow, and nobody else in the room asked what the gap was meant to hold.
