Winged heart with roses flash
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a heart with feathered wings spreading upward from behind it, set above two open roses. Short radiating lines surround the heart and roses, and a thin cross of lines runs behind the composition. The work uses bold black outlines with hatched shading in the wings and petals, on a plain white background.

The summons was already cooling on the kitchen table when the bell at Saint Idony's began to ring without a rope, and my mother said that was what happened when a kingdom wanted its heart back. The Hollow Monastery sat so high that the clouds came in through the cloister arches. The abbess, Mother Sabine, met me at the gate with a lantern and took the roses without a word. In the chapel she showed me a silver reliquary the size of a loaf, and inside it lay a heart with feathered wings folded tight against its sides, like a prayer nobody had finished. It beat so hard that the candles leaned toward it. She said the first king had traded it for a crown, and that a heart which can fly out of a locked hall is a poor thing to keep behind a grille.
I laid the roses beside the reliquary, and the wings unfolded with a sound like sheets drying on a line. Light came off them in long thin rays that struck the chapel walls and threw a cross of shadow across the floor. Mother Sabine only nodded, as though she had been waiting forty years for someone to bring the right flowers. I carried the heart down the mountain in my sack, and at the border stone, where the sun first hit the valley, I opened the cloth. It rose out of my hands, circled the church tower twice, and went over the hills. Behind me the bells in Thessavale finally stopped.
