Witch hat and broomstick on upper back

Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo

A witch's pointed hat with a purple bow sits at the top of a broomstick, with a purple ribbon trailing down and curling around the handle. The hat is shaded in black and grey with bold outlines, while the ribbon and bow are purple and the broom bristles are grey. The design is set against lightly reddened skin on the upper back, shown in a close, slightly angled view.

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Carlisle on Tuesday, though nobody will say so in the programme. Mr Varley has painted over the lion's name on the wagon and calls the Hardcastle Brothers' Grand Revue a 'family spectacle' now, which means the tent is patched with feed sacks and the band is two men and a tuba. I still have the broom. He let me keep it when he sold the horses.

The hat was Ma's idea, you'll remember, the old black felt she bought from a bankrupt milliner in Leeds, with the purple grosgrain bow she sewed on at the last minute because the act needed colour under the lamps. Every night for eleven years I rode that broom up through the rigging and over the crowd, the ribbon streaming out behind like a kite string. Last night the wind came through the flap and the ribbon caught the lamp, and for a second it looked as if the whole thing was alight. Nobody screamed. Nobody was looking up anymore.

Varley wants me to do the final flight alone on Saturday, one last turn before the auction. I've told him I'll go up, but I won't hang from the rigging for an empty tent. I think I'll walk the broom down the lane past the fairground and leave the hat on the gate post for whoever comes next. You always said I was too stubborn for my own good. Write back before Saturday and tell me the sea is still there.

Yours, Pip
