Woman and cat in a heart on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A woman's profile with an updo hairstyle and a tabby cat face meet inside a large heart, framed by dark leaves and orange and cream flowers. The heart is shaded in black and grey with bold outlines, while the faces, cat and flowers use warm skin tones, orange and red. The words BOYS WHATEVER and CATS FOREVER curve around the top and bottom of the heart, and the design is centred on the tattooed leg.

Aunt Marjorie wore her hair piled up like a meringue every Saturday, pinned with eleven hairgrips she counted aloud, and she did not suffer fools, dogs or the postman's sandals in February. Her tabby, Admiral, had a face like a disappointed burglar and the same opinions. The two of them ran the post office and shop on Brennick, the smallest inhabited island off the coast, where the ferry came on Tuesdays if the swell allowed it.

The spring Colin Pascoe proposed, he did it on the slipway at low tide, kneeling on a wet tarpaulin with a ring in an empty cockle shell. I was sixteen and holding the shop broom, so I saw all of it. Marjorie looked at the shell, then at Colin, then down at Admiral, who had sat himself on the tarpaulin to supervise. 'Boys, whatever,' she said. 'Cats, forever.' Then she walked back up the path without taking the ring, and Colin stayed on his knees until the tide came in around his shins.

Nobody thought she would keep to it. But that autumn Colin started leaving a tin of mackerel on the post office step every morning, and Marjorie started bringing the tin inside, and by December the two of them were arguing over the crossword in the back room while Admiral slept across the dictionary.

Colin's shell sat on the shelf above the till for years, its ring still inside. When Marjorie died, the cat moved onto the counter, and I found him there, curled on her hairgrips, with the ring catching the lamplight like something he had decided to keep.
