Woman's face, heart and roots across a back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo covers most of the upper back, showing a stylised woman's face framed by abstract shapes at the top. Below, an orange anatomical heart sits over black mountain or ridge forms, with red and orange brushed bands and splatter, and branching black roots extend down to the bottom of the design. Bold colour dominates, with black outlines and shading, and the composition is centred on the spine.

The cool box rode in the passenger seat with its seatbelt across it, because Nell Garrity had once watched a courier brake hard and watched a liver slide across a van floor, and she had not forgotten. The A470 ran black between the ridges, sleet smearing the windscreen, and the only light came from her headlamps and the orange sodium glow of a village that dropped behind her as quickly as it had appeared.

Her phone lit up on the dash. Tom, the registrar at Liverpool, wanted an estimated arrival time for the third time since Bangor. She told him ninety minutes, maybe less if the pass stayed clear, and he said the theatre team had been sitting in scrubs since eleven and were starting to lose the thread of their own jokes. She said she'd heard the same jokes twice already. He laughed, and the line went quiet except for the wipers.

At the top of the pass she stopped on the verge because the cloud had torn open and the ridgeline stood out against a sky thick with stars, peaks like broken teeth, the dark spurs running down to the valley like roots going the wrong way. The donor form in her lap had given her a name, an age and one line in the box marked notes: walked the tops every Sunday until the knees went. Nell lifted the lid a crack, checked the logger that read four degrees, and let the cold air fall back against her wrists.

She closed the lid, clicked the belt tight, and pulled back onto the road. The sleet had stopped. Ahead the motorway lights gathered like a thread pulled through the dark, and she drove towards them carefully, as if the road itself might be counting.
