Apple held in hands over a sunburst on the back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman's bare upper back shows a tattoo of a shaded red apple cupped in two hands, drawn with black-and-grey shading on the hands and fine detail on the fruit. Radiating orange and red lines form a sunburst behind the apple, and abstract coloured bars in orange, yellow and brown rise above it toward the shoulder. Colour ink dominates the composition, with the black shading on the hands giving the lower centre of the design its weight.

Dear Tom,

The Pearmain crop came in so heavy that Dad has had Ellis and the two Polish boys up the ladders since five, and I have been sent to the packing shed to sort the bruised from the sound. You would laugh. I hold each one in both hands, turn it to the light and decide. Mrs Hobday says I have the knack. I say it is only patience, the same patience you had with the wireless valves.
Yesterday the sun came up through the gap in the Long Field as though someone had struck a match behind the hedge, and every blade of grass threw its light at once. I stood in the doorway with a Cox in my palm and thought of Miss Arkell's lesson about the garden in the book, how the fruit is never named, only called knowledge, and how nobody in the class argued. I did not tell her I thought that was a kindness on the book's part.
Mr Crane from the station came by at noon for the post and stopped at the shed to ask for one for his wife. I wrapped it in a sheet of the Kentish Express and he went off whistling. The bars of light across the yard reminded me of the stripes on the tent the fair put up last summer, orange and brown and that bright yellow we hardly saw during the war.
I have kept the bruised one back for you. It is on the sill by the window. When you come home at Christmas you can have it, and we will cut it together and see whether the inside is as sweet as the outside looks.
Love, Jean
