A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are standing at the pit head at Carrow Hill when the wind turns and the cage bell stops. Your mother has her hand pressed flat against her mouth. Your father went down on the early shift with the canary in its wicker cage on his arm, and the bird has not come back up with the empty cage. Nobody says it aloud. The lamp man only looks at the sky, where a thin moon hangs above the spoil heap like a paring of fingernail.

Nan Tully has told you the story since you could walk. There is a fairy who sits in the horn of the moon and keeps the things the earth has swallowed, and if you climb high enough on the slag, past the stunted hawthorns and the broken tubs, you can ask her for them back. You are eleven and you do not believe a word of it, which is why you go anyway. The shale slides under your boots, and the lamps of the village shrink to a scatter of coins below you.

At the top the moon is so close you could touch its swirling edge. She is sitting in the curve of it, all trailing sleeves and lace-fine wings, and she holds out one hand. The canary is perched on her finger, singing as if the air were clean. "He was never lost," she says. "He was only waiting for someone to listen for him." You take the cage from her, and the song rises through the iron bars like water through a sieve.

You carry the bird down the heap with both hands. At the bottom, the cage bell rings twice, and the lamp man is already running. Your father comes up out of the dark with soot on his face and a cough in his chest, and he laughs when he sees the bird singing. You do not tell him about the fairy. You only hold the little cage a bit tighter, and when he asks what you were doing on the slag, you say you were keeping watch for him.
