Woman with bonsai pine tattoo design, pencil sketch

Japanese · Shoulder · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil sketch in a sketchbook shows a woman with her eyes closed, her long hair falling forward and a shawl draped over her body. A bonsai pine design with twisted trunks and needle clusters covers her shoulder and upper arm, with a scalloped pattern along the edge of the shawl. The drawing uses soft graphite shading and fine hatching, with a large pine branch filling the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pine outside the kitchen window had been bent under the snow since Tuesday, and I kept going to look at it, the way you check a sleeping child. Mrs Harrowgate, who ran the Hollin Fell inn with a ledger and a temper, said it would straighten when the thaw came, that pines were stubborn that way. She said a great many things that winter, most of them about the guests who had stopped coming up the valley road.

The man in room four had arrived on the last cart before the drifts closed the pass. He carried a flat wooden box and would not say what was in it. On the third night he asked me to fetch the rope from the stable, and I found him in the yard in his shirtsleeves, snow settling on his shoulders, pruning a little pine he had dug up from the bank by the gate. He cut each branch with a slow, careful patience, and when I asked why he was tying the trunk so tight, he said a tree grown wild will always remember its first shape, and you have to teach it again what it was meant to be.

He left at dawn on the fourth day, the road cleared, and the box was gone with him. But the pine stood in the yard after, twisted into a crouch, its needles clustered like a shawl drawn close against the cold. Mrs Harrowgate came out with her ledger under her arm and stopped beside me. She looked at the little tree for a long time and then, without a word, wrote something in the margin and closed the book.
