Woman with wolf, skull, rose and crows
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a woman in left profile with tears falling from one eye, a wolf's head above her, and a skull and rose by her temple. Crows and feathers fill the right side, with lit candles and a moon in the background. The linework is fine and detailed with soft shading in the hair and feathers, and the drawing is entirely in graphite greys.

Dear Ada, you will not believe what the Palais has become since the blackout started. Mr Cready lit candles along the balcony rail because the electric is only switched on for Saturday dances, and on the nights in between the whole place glows like a chapel. The crows came with the candles, I think. They sit on the gutters outside the long windows and watch the couples go round, and nobody can shoo them off, because Mrs Hollis swears they are the men who danced here before the first war and never went home.

Last Thursday a girl came in alone, wearing a grey coat with a fox collar that still had its teeth. She asked for the pianist. I was the only one left at the keys after the quartet packed up, so I played her the slow waltz she wanted, the one with the dropped note in the middle. She didn't dance. She stood by the piano with her cheek near the lid and cried without a sound, and every time the note fell she shut her eyes as if it had struck her.
When I finished she said the note was her mother's, and that her mother had sung over the wireless from a farm out past the Wolds, and that the wolf was the only thing left on the land once the men took the sheep. I did not know what to say. She laid a black feather on the piano lid, glossy as wet slate, and walked out into the moonlight with her coat unbuttoned.
I found the feather this morning under the pedal. I have pressed it into the hymn book. Come on Sunday and play the dropped note with me, if you still remember how it goes. Love, Mab
