Woman with rose in hair, red line drawing
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a woman's face and shoulders with her hair swept across her forehead and a large rose with leaves tucked into it. Her hand rests near her chin. The linework is red, with shading built up through fine hatching and soft tonal areas. The composition is a tall, tightly framed vertical design on a pale background.

You have been driving since before the sun cleared the ridge, and the red pencil is still in the cup holder where you left it after the last sketch. The old road out of Tonopah is no longer signed on the county maps, and it forgets itself somewhere past the salt flats. Out here the only people who stop are the ones who need petrol or a second opinion on their directions.

The petrol station at Calico Wells has one pump and a woman named Ines who keeps a rose bush in a coffee tin beside the till. She says the cutting came off a church wall in Durango, and that it has never once bloomed in the dry months, only in the week the monsoon finally turns up. You ask her to hold still while you sketch her hands on the counter, but she laughs and tells you to draw the rose instead, because the rose is the one that stays.
So you do. Three pages in red pencil, hatching the petals until the paper goes faintly glossy, leaves tucked behind each bloom the way the stems fold under a heavy head. When you finally look up, dust has filled the road and the sun is a coin behind it. Ines is already wrapping the tin in a towel. "Take the good sheet," she says, "and when you get to the coast, pin it somewhere the wind can't reach." You fold it into your jacket and drive on into the glare.
