Wooden cross draped with a flag

Realism · Colour · Photo

A wooden cross stands at the centre, with a flag with red and white stripes and blue stars draped over its crossbar and down one side. Soft blue and grey clouds sit behind the cross, and grass is shown at the bottom. The shading is smooth and realistic, with strong highlights on the folds of the fabric and a warm brown tone on the wood.

The wind up on the ridge above Kestle Farm had teeth in it, and Dora kept the lamp low so the men wouldn't see her hands shake. The cross we'd found lying in the bracken was nothing much, two planks of grey oak somebody had hewn for a grave that never got its name carved. Corporal Ashby wanted to burn it for kindling. I wouldn't let him.

We stood it upright against the drystone wall at dusk and I draped the flag over the crossbar because it was the only thing in the kit that wasn't mud. It had been folded so long the stripes had gone soft as flannel. The sky behind was that bruise blue you only get after rain, with grey smudged through it like thumb marks on glass. Nobody spoke. The grass at the foot of the post was already pushing up through the frost.

In the morning Ashby came back from the cookhouse with two mugs of tea and stopped dead at the wall. The flag had slipped down one side and hung almost to the ground, blue field over the stripes, and the light coming through the clouds caught the white stars just so. He set one mug on the stone and didn't say anything for a long while.

We moved on at noon. I looked back once from the lane and the cross was still there, leaning a little, with its colours running down it like something that had decided to stay.
