World map tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black outline world map sits on the inner forearm, with the continents drawn in thin, unshaded linework. Soft pink, purple and teal washes fill parts of the map, giving a loose watercolour effect. The arm is shown against a plain light background, with a knitted grey sweater sleeve pushed up above the tattoo.

Mrs Adeyemi brought her father's atlas into the shop on a wet Tuesday, its spine held together with parcel tape. She opened it to the Indian Ocean and tapped a page of worn blue. 'Paint it the way it looked when he came home,' she said. I told her I could only copy what was printed. She shook her head. 'Printed things are the first to lie. He sailed the real thing for thirty years and never once saw a line drawn on the sea.'

So I did it her way. I drew the coastlines in fine black, thin as fishing line, because the paper asked for nothing more. Then I loaded the brush with rose madder and let it bleed into the Americas until they looked like pressed petals. Teal went over the Mediterranean, which she said had always been the colour of his gloves. Lilac crept along the edge of Africa, and wherever the wash ran too far it pooled against the inked margins and dried to a stain no ruler could have made.
On the last afternoon she came back and stood over the stencil with her arms folded. She said nothing for a long while. Then she pointed at a patch of Australia where the pink had strayed into open sea. 'That's where the ship went off course,' she said, 'the year he stopped writing.' She wanted it left exactly as it was.
I inked it that way, drift and all. She paid in cash and folded the atlas shut. At the door she paused in the grey light, and the sea I had painted seemed to spill past the edge of the lines, as if it had somewhere else to be.
